Un Nuevo Amanecer - A New Dawn


“Un Nuevo Amanecer” (a new dawn) is a nonprofit organization for children with developmental problems and other handicapped children.

Un Nuevo amanecer (UNA) is situated in “La Crucecita”, Bahias de Huatulco.

The rooms used by UNA are above a hardware store “Ferrealianza”, on Jazmin Street.

Visitors who are interested and would like to visit are welcome. UNA is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. till 3 p.m.

During 2019, over 130 children between 5 months and 16 years in treatment.

Oaxaca is the second poorest state in Mexico. 70% of the children who come to us are living under the poverty line.

The children come from all over the town sectors and regions of Bahias de Huatulco and also from little villages in the surrounding. Some travel quite a distance (1-4 hours) to have treatment.



Un Nuevo Amanecer, UNA, is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping children with mental and physical disabilities, as well as children exposed to high risk factors for disabilities. Through our programs in Santa Maria Huatulco, La Crucecita, Copalita, and the surrounding communities we strive to:
  • Early stimulation and intervention for children with development problems and handicaps
  • Integrate disabled children within their families and their community
  • Information and education for parents and people who are close to the child to achieve advances in the living conditions and the development of the child
  • Prevent, when possible, the incidence and reoccurance of childhood disabilities
  • Educate the families and communities of disabled children to provide a better supportive structure for the maximum development of the child

Work content

Therapists, pedagogues, and psychologists work with the children. Most of these children have 1-2 appointments a week, on average one hour. Further we do school- and home visits if there is an indication for it.

-          Speech therapy, Logopedia

-          Physiotherapy

-          occupational therapy

general help for the families, for example: financial support for doctor appointments, support of there are problems with nourishment


UNA was founded as a response to the number of disabled children for whom there was a lack of treatment and support services.  Established by parents and volunteers in 1995, UNA has achieved the following goals:

  • 1995  UNA, in cooperation with the DIF, completed the first formal census of disabled and at risk children
  • 1995  UNA founded the Special Education School to service the surrounding community
  • 1996  UNA began a community program for the detection, attention, and direction of children with disablities, as well as programs aimed at prevention
  • 1997  UNA opened the Center for Early Stimulation and Assistance
  • From 1997 to the present, UNA has continued to incorporate and improve their programs within the community


UNA has established nine programs that function both within the center and at rural community out-reach centers.  These programs include:

  • Early stimulation
  • Physical Therapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Speech Therapy
  • Hydrotherapy
  • Nutritional Therapy and Counseling
  • Detection and Prevention
  • Free Medical Clinics
  • Overall Family and Individual Support


  • To increase the coverage of service for disabled children
  • Strengthen our internal structure to enable the organization to detect, diagnose, treat, rehabilitate, integrate, prevent and provide follow-up care
  • Diminish the incidences of disabilities and reduce their reoccurance
  • Ensure that parents, communities, and institutions accept their responsibility to better and further the education of disabled children
  • Promote and establish programs that are well known and easily accessible to the community
